THE ART & SCIENCE OF LEADING SELF
Holiday Wisdom for Leadership
My friend, in 2018, I celebrated Christmas in Chennai, India while on sabbatical.
The experience transformed my perspective on holiday celebrations. In South India, Christmas wasn't buried under layers of commercialism. It focused purely on celebrating the birth of Jesus, a moment that brought hope and light into the world.
This simplicity and clarity of purpose touched my heart deeply and has stayed with me.
As we enter this special season, I find myself reflecting on 4 celebrations that bring light and meaning to December: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and yes, even Festivus.
Each offers unique wisdom about leadership that resonates far beyond their seasonal celebrations. Allow me to share what I've learned from each tradition.
Christmas: Leadership Lessons from a Divine Arrival
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christians believe God sent his son Jesus to Earth to save humanity. Though Jesus was divine, he was born in a humble manger, not a grand palace.
Here are 3 leadership lessons you can take from the Christmas story:
The Power of Humble Leadership: Born in a manger rather than a palace, Jesus exemplified that true leadership isn't about status or position. Your impact as a leader flows from your heart and purpose, not your title or office.
Vision as a Guiding Star: The star guiding the wise men reminds us that clear vision illuminates the path for others. Like that celestial beacon, your leadership vision should provide direction and inspire others to undertake challenging journeys.
Inclusive Leadership: The shepherds - common laborers of their time - were the first to hear the glorious news. This teaches us that great leadership recognizes the value and dignity of all people, regardless of their status or position.
Hanukkah: Faith and Resilience in Leadership
Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C.
After fighting for their religious freedom in the Maccabean Revolt, the Jewish people reclaimed the Temple. They found they only had enough oil to light the menorah for 1 day, yet miraculously, it burned for 8 days until more oil could be prepared.
Here are 3 leadership lessons you can take from the story of Hanukkah:
Standing Firm in Beliefs: The Jewish people's unwavering commitment to their faith despite immense pressure to assimilate reinforces the importance of authentic leadership. Your effectiveness as a leader often depends on staying true to your core values, especially when facing pressure to compromise.
Resilience Against Odds: The Maccabees' victory over a much larger force demonstrates that Resilience often matters more than initial advantages. The Maccabees’ example reminds you that maintaining faith in your mission can help you overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Resource Optimization: The miracle of the oil models what it looks like to make the most of limited resources. Great leaders don't just manage resources; they optimize them through innovation and faith in possibilities.
Kwanzaa: Unity and Purpose in Leadership

Dr. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa, a celebration of African American culture and heritage, in 1966.
The holiday honors African American history and promotes 7 core principles that strengthen community and purpose: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-determination), Ujima (Collective Work & Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
Here are 2 leadership lessons you can take from the principles of Kwanzaa:
Umoja (Unity): This principle reminds us that effective leadership creates cohesion from diversity. Your ability to unite different perspectives and strengths toward a common goal is essential for Innovation and growth.
Nia (Purpose): Purpose-driven leadership provides meaning beyond metrics. This principle challenges you to ensure your leadership serves a greater purpose than just achieving targets or maintaining status quo.
Festivus: Unexpected Leadership Wisdom

You and I know Festivus from Seinfeld.
Well, this holiday was actually a family tradition created by writer Daniel O'Keefe in 1966. That family tradition was later popularized when his son, a writer on Seinfeld, featured it in an episode of the popular TV show. This December 23rd celebration, with its aluminum pole and unique rituals, offers a lighthearted (yet insightful) take on holiday traditions.
Here are 2 leadership lessons you can take from Festivus:
The Value of Honest Feedback: The "Airing of Grievances" reminds us that creating space for honest feedback - even when uncomfortable - is crucial for leadership growth. This takes Courage but ultimately builds stronger teams.
Demonstrating Resilience: The "Feats of Strength" represent the importance of leaders demonstrating resilience under challenge. Your ability to face and overcome challenges sets an example for your entire team.
